The weather’s canned today.
It’s done this before.
I feel cheap when I applaud it
but sometimes the weather needs us
to say it’s OK if the sky gives out
if it goes home early
and we stay inside. Last night
my dreams bent back. My one leg
grew longer than the other.
I had a moment in a hot air balloon.
You were there, but not happy about it.
You went up anyway, so thanks.
This morning sprung a new theory
of gray and the Connecticut River
and what people can do for people.
The city came by for the trash.
On the curb, I found a science
of imaginary solutions
which was a good thing:
The car had a flat. Our kitchen
was green with dishes. The dog was lost
but he was returning.
Hey Darling. You caught me flying low
in my brother’s apt. in Walltown til Saturday.
By Monday I’ll be on campus
in Massachusetts and 25 degrees cooler there
than here. Where you getting out of?
You have traveler energy. The Arkansas Travelers
are my favorite baseball team
going by name only. Traveler was the name of a horse.
I wonder if I’ll ever outrun the idea
that somewhere along a byway there’s a glow
I could find or harvest or lay down in a field
overgrown with it and spend years scratching my back
like a dog? It’s like waiting to be struck by God
wanting some electricity to set my energies correct.
Two days ago I stopped at one of two covered bridges
still standing in North Carolina – off 70
in Burke County over a creek that starts with L.
The Internet claims that’s a lie. The road signs
seemed pretty authoritative. I remember you in Roxboro
saying it’d be air-conditioning and falling prices
if we didn’t get afraid sometimes. Those, and sunscreen
and false teeth. You’re the best mover I know.
If you could Fedex me a fishing pole and a canoe?
I’ll be sewing my jeans up in my down time
in the living room. I’ll be cooking my eggs
on car hoods in beer foam in twilight.
